Our History

Colonial Compliance, Inc. was founded in 1988 as EZ Compliance, Inc., and is a subsidiary of Colonial Group, Inc. Specializing in maritime safety, security, and environmental compliance, we provide assistance to ship owners, managers, agents, and crews who must comply with the International Conventions such as SOLAS and MARPOL as well as those required by the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations. Since evolving from the technical department of a U.S. based ship management company, Colonial Compliance Systems, Inc. has established an extensive network of international clientele. We provide safety inspection and auditing assistance to vessels worldwide. Our staff consists of quality-oriented professionals with a wide range of experience in International and U.S. regulatory requirements, as well as technical and operational matters, and includes former Coast Guard officers, Master Mariners and Chief Engineers. Over the years, our quality approach, professionalism, and expertise in handling difficult inspection and response incidents has gained us a worldwide reputation as one of the world’s leading safety, security, environmental, and regulatory service companies.

Since the implementation of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA90), ship owners and operators have been faced with a myriad of pollution planning and response requirements. From the very beginning, Colonial Compliance, Inc. has demonstrated its leadership and expertise in this area in providing Vessel Response Plan (VRP), Qualified Individual, and Spill Management services. We enjoy an excellent reputation with the U.S. Coast Guard, various States, and P&I Clubs. With the increased U.S. enforcement and criminal prosecution of “magic pipe” illegal waste oil discharge cases by the Department of Justice, Colonial Compliance, Inc. has brought together its regulatory, auditing and environmental compliance expertise in assisting vessel owners and operators in complying with the Environmental Compliance Programs mandated by the U.S. Government in these cases. Under these Programs, Colonial Compliance, Inc. has served as Court Appointed Monitor, Third Party Auditor and Independent ECP Consultant.

Colonial Compliance, Inc. offers a full range of products and services to assist foreign flag and U.S. merchant vessels in complying with U.S. Coast Guard Port State Control requirements, International Conventions such as MARPOL and SOLAS, and the various U.S. port and individual state requirements.
